JJMBC Refuge Meeting Reports

YCM Report

For January 12, 2010

Last night was quite informative and productive. Everyone, please attend to the highlighted sections. If you were not able to come yesterday, please read through all the minutes to make sure you are informed of everything we discussed.

  • We started in traditional form, praying to the Lord for guidance.
  • We then opened the table for discussion and general comments.
    • It was pointed out that 6:00 Sunday nights meeting times are more convenient than 7:00.
  • We discussed what the Youth have accomplished between August and December
    • Their average attendance is up from 18 to 32
    • They have chosen to sponsor a WorldVision child
    • Many have memorized 11 passages of scripture
    • Many have been through a discipleship book
    • They have been going on an in-depth walk through the book of Matthew
    • They have established a habit of taking sermon notes
    • Many people have grown in immeasurable, intangible ways

  • We acknowledged our Volunteer Leaders
    • Pat Behan
    • Chris Mills

        • I was not clear with the dates last night; my apologies. The dates will be 7/11 - 7/16.
        • The cost is not yet set, but will probably be in the upper 200's (not including food)
        • More information can be found at this site: http://www.studentlife.com/events/events.php?cn=1362&cNav=1452
        • Please let me know of any concerns ASAP! We have to register for this event by the end of the month!
      • Base classes: 1st base for those who haven't attended a base class before, 2nd base for those who have.
    • Outreach:
      • Mission trip to Nicaragua
        • I hear the parents' concern regarding this trip. These are your children, and you are concerned for their welfare. I appreciate your concern - it is a big deal to let our kids go to Nicaragua.
        • Please understand my thoughts:
          • Ronnie Hill ministries has taken 5 consecutive summer missions trips to Central America; none have resulted in any harm coming to any of the students.
          • More good has come from the last missions trip alone than most people are a part of in a whole lifetime.
          • Jackson has made a commitment to international missions, and this is something I've inherited when I came here (not my decision).
          • And, as idealistic as it may sound, when we go on missions trips where we step out of our comfort zones, God does the most work in us and through us.
        • This being said, I understand that many of you may feel like you have not had the opportunity to voice your concerns.
        • I'm putting a hold on the Nicaragua trip for the next two weeks. Take this time to pray, approach me with your ideas and thoughts, and perhaps provide an alternative.
        • Here's the link to the information for last year's trip: http://www.ronniehill.com/missions.htm
      • Regular outreach to the community
      • Regular outreach to the elderly and incapacitated at our church
      • Movie nights and game nights at the church to reach out to local youth
    • Relationship: (We did not have time to discuss the details here)
  • We discussed basic "Goals" and "God-sized Goals" for the Youth in 2010
    • Basic = Regular Sunday morning attendance of 70
    • God-sized = Regular attendance of 120, including Youth service and worship band
  • During the discussion of goals, I discussed the meeting I had with the youth on December 20th (The meeting with the "Refugees"). The youth indicated unanimously that they are ready for and want more activities, more outreach, and more Biblical instruction.
  • I then emphasized that this means we, as adults working with the youth, need to step up to the plate. The youth are ready, we have to provide the infrastructure.
  • To this end, I then explained the establishment of two new positions in the Youth department:
  • Service Coordinator:
    • Plan and oversee regular community service opportunities
    • Plan and oversee outreach to the elderly in our church
    • Keep the Youth Calendar updated with her/his additions
    • Maintain weekly communication with the Youth Pastor
  • Event Coordinator:
    • Plan and oversee regular movie nights, game nights
    • Run the logistics of youth events
    • Keep the Youth Calendar updated with his/her additions
    • Maintain weekly communication with the Youth Pastor
  • It was decided that we would provide everyone time to pray over these positions and I will expect to hear from some by Sunday. It was again emphasized that these two positions are critical for the growth of our youth, both in number and in relationship with Christ.
  • The volunteer leadership positions were then reassigned.
    • Pat Behan offered to continue his position indefinitely.
    • Chris Mills informed me that the Weavers had taken over her position.
    • Janice Matthews will be temporarily stepping down from her position; this leaves the Chaperone coordinator position open. Please pray about this and let me know if you will be able to do this (maintain a list of parents' phone numbers and arrange chaperones for events as requested by the Youth Pastor)
    • Kim Skeeter is considering maintaining her position as event coordinator, but needs some time to pray considering the larger scope of the position.
  • Our need for a Sunday morning middle school teacher was then voiced. We are currently looking for a volunteer to teach approximately 10 middle-school aged children for half an hour on Sunday mornings. Their lessons will be based off of what the Youth Pastor is covering (currently the book of Matthew, chapter 15).
  • The need for musical instruments was expressed:
    • Guitar (preferably acoustic)
    • Bass guitar
    • Drums
  • Finally, we discussed the schedule of events for the upcoming month:

    • Drop off students by 6pm on Friday
    • Pick up students at 4:45 on Saturday
    • Send them with lunch money, a sleeping bag, and a pillow!
    • If you are going to pick up your student, please let Nabeel know ASAP!
  • First base class:
    • This Sunday, 1/17, 12:30-2:00 pm (right after big church)
    • Please send your child if he/she has never been to a base class before
    • Pizza and drinks will be included.
  • Sunday night visitations:
    • Start this Sunday, 1/17
    • From 6:00-8:30 or so
    • Need drivers! If you are willing to drive this Sunday night, please let Nabeel know!
  • Business meeting, 1/24
    • Nabeel will be presenting the 2010 vision for the Youth
    • Please come to support and provide your presence!
  • Discipleship reward trip: Massanutten
    • Leaving at 8:00 am on 1/29
    • Returning at 4:30 pm on 2/1
    • The speaker on the trip (as well as the Wednesday night before the trip) will be Tom Westbrook.
Like I said, we accomplished a lot last night! Thanks for taking the time to read this, and please be prayerful and ask God to lead you regarding these positions and requests. I will be waiting to hear from you :-)

In Christ,
-Nabeel
